An evening of celebration – both of music, and of care and support for people with a brain injury - hosted by legendary jazz singer Honor Heffernan and featuring some of Ireland’s most revered musicians. Heffernan’s support for An Saol was inspired by the great care the foundation has been giving to her friend and former accompanist, renowned English pianist Phil Ware, who suffered a severe brain injury in 2022. After witnessing the brilliant work that the An Soal foundation was doing to help her friend to recover, Heffernan decided she had to help and she asked some of her best friends in jazz to join in. This will be a night of jazz and community such as is rarely witnessed these days, and a chance to show support and appreciation for a visionary project that is transforming Irish lives for the better…

Honor Heffernan, Ireland’s most revered jazz singer, has enjoyed a long and illustrious career that has included collaborations with film director Neil Jordan and legendary guitarist Louis Stewart. Now in her sixth decade as a singer, Heffernan remains a riveting performer, able to bring her own truth to any song, with a repertoire that ranges from songbook standards to Joni Mitchell to rock and blues. In recent years, she has begun a new collaboration with renowned pianist Carole Nelson, whose fine trio with bassist Cormac O Brien and drummer Dominic Mullen, forms the basis for Heffernan’s current group.
Joining them will be a roll call of Irish jazz grandees, including: internationally lauded vocalist Christine Tobin and her partner, the much-respected English guitarist Phil Robson; the celebrated husband and wife team of vocalist Carmel McCreagh and pianist Fiachra Trench, whose illustrious credits as an arranger include Paul McCartney, U2 and the Pogues; legendary pianist Jim Doherty, one of the key figures in the evolution of Irish jazz; and leading jazz instrumentalists including rising Australian saxophonist Daniel Rorke and much-loved Dublin guitarist Hugh Buckley.
The evening will feature an eclectic mix of music covering the last century of great songwriters, with the performers combining in many different combinations. Expect music from the likes of Gershwin, Cole Porter and Rogers and Hart, along with more recent favourites from Joni Mitchell and Tom Waits, as well as jazz standards and originals from some of the talented musicians on stage.
All the performers have generously waived their fees, and all profits from this performance go to the An Saol foundation and its 2024 Teach An Saol campaign for a permanent National Centre for Life and Living with a sABI. For more information about An Saol, go to http://ansaol.ie
